Despite beating Sri Lanka by four wickets in the ODI tri-series in Australia on Wednesday, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has urged his players to learn from their mistakes and try to avoid injury.
Star batsman Virat Kohli smashed a valiant 77 in the victory, but his innings was cut short when he was run out after suffering from leg cramps while at the crease. Kohli's dismissal came at a crucial stage in the match and left India wobbling at 181 for six in chase of 234. However, an unbeaten stand of 53 from Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja saw the Indians march to victory.
"You do not get a runner nowadays. You have to learn from mistakes and ensure that you do not get cramps. But it happens," Dhoni said after the match.
"You have to be ready for these circumstances. You have to hydrate yourself well overnight and during the game."
The Indian skipper was proud of the way Ashwin played as the off-spinner took three for 32 in his ten overs before hitting the winning runs in his unbeaten knock of 30.
"I always smile whether we are winning or losing, it is good to be on the winning side. Bowlers did really well. Praveen Kumar had an off day today and so Ashwin had to bowl out of his comfort zone in the Power-plays and the slog overs. He bowled well and batted well when we chased," Dhoni said.
"We have confidence in Ravindra Jadeja to bat at number seven and he also bowled well," he added.
Man-of-the-match Ashwin added that he was delighted to contribute to the Indian victory, especially after enduring a dismal Test series which saw his side whitewashed four-nil by Australia.
"It was gripping a little bit, I got a few wickets and at the end, finished it off with the bat. One victory on the board is very important. I was desperate to get a win today," he said.
