Michael Clarke won't play in Sunday's ODI tri-series clash against India as he continues to nurse a hamstring injury.
The right-handed batsman endured the ailment in Adelaide last week and was subsequently ruled out of Friday's clash against Sri Lanka, which Australia lost by eight wickets.
T20I captain has been called up to the ODI fold as cover for Clarke, while the uncapped Jon Holland will remain with the squad in case of a recurrence of Xavier Doherty's back spasms.
"George Bailey has been added to the Australian squad as a standby batsman for this match in Brisbane. While it is not ideal having to take George away from the Sheffield Shield match currently underway in Hobart, we feel it is important we have sufficient batting cover in our squad," said coach Mickey Arthur.
"This selection is reward for George's excellent form with Tasmania this season and recognition that we consider him the next batsman in line for Australian one-day selection."
Team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris added: "Michael Clarke is progressing well in his recovery from a right hamstring injury but remains unavailable for selection in Brisbane. His availability for the ODI in Hobart will be determined early next week.
Former full-time skipper Ricky Ponting will continue to lead the side on a stand-in basis in Clarke's absence.
"I did have a think about it - the stand-in captaincy - and I had a good chat to national selector John Inverarity about that and what some of my concerns were around that," said Ponting.
"But I decided to do what they wanted me to do and what I felt was probably right for the team right at the moment."
